Richtig klasse geschrieben ist zum Beispiel <a href=\"http:\/\/cablegate.wikileaks.org\/cable\/2004\/12\/04ANKARA7211.html\">dieser geheime Bericht<\/a> des seinerzeitigen Botschafters Eric Edelman aus Ankara von Ende 2004. Darin finden sich sehr freim\u00fctige Einsch\u00e4tzungen des Premierministers Erdogan, des damaligen Au\u00dfenminister G\u00fcl, der Chancen der T\u00fcrkei auf einen EU-Beitritt, des islamistischen Einflusses auf die AKP, der Lage des Islams in der T\u00fcrkei und allgemeiner Hindernisse der T\u00fcrkei auf dem Weg in den Westen.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<pre>...Erdogan's hunger for power reveals\r\nitself in a sharp authoritarian style and deep distrust of\r\nothers: as a former spiritual advisor to Erdogan and his wife\r\nEmine put it, \"Tayyip Bey believes in God...but doesn't trust\r\nhim.\"  In surrounding himself with an iron ring of\r\nsycophantic (but contemptuous) advisors, Erdogan has isolated\r\nhimself from a flow of reliable information, which partially\r\nexplains his failure to understand the context -- or real\r\nfacts -- of the U.S. operations in Tel Afar, Fallujah, and\r\nelsewhere and his susceptibility to Islamist theories.  With\r\nregard to Islamist influences on Erdogan, DefMin Gonul, who\r\nis a conservative but worldly Muslim, recently described Gul\r\nassociate Davutoglu to us as \"exceptionally dangerous.\"\r\nErdogan's other foreign policy advisors (Cuneyd Zapsu, Egemen\r\nBagis, Omer Celik, along with Mucahit Arslan and chef de\r\ncabinet Hikmet Bulduk) are despised as inadequate, out of\r\ntouch and corrupt by all our AKP contacts from ministers to\r\nMPs and party intellectuals.\r\n...\r\n<\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<pre>Two Big Questions\r\n\r\n----------------- \r\n\r\n<a id=\"par24\" href=\"http:\/\/cablegate.wikileaks.org\/cable\/2004\/12\/04ANKARA7211.html#par24\">\u00b6<\/a>24. (C) Turkey's EU bid has brought forth reams of\r\n\r\npronouncements and articles -- Mustafa Akyol's\r\n\r\nGulenist-tinged \"Thanksgiving for Turkey\" in Dec. 27 Weekly\r\n\r\nStandard is one of the latest -- attempting to portray Islam\r\n\r\nin Turkey as distinctively moderate and tolerant with a\r\n\r\nstrong mystical (Sufi) underpinning.  Certainly, one can see\r\n\r\nin Turkey's theology faculties some attempts to wrestle with\r\n\r\nthe problems of critical thinking, free will, and precedent\r\n\r\n(ictihad), attempts which, compared to what goes on in\r\n\r\ntheology faculties in the Arab world, may appear relatively\r\n\r\nprogressive.\r\n\r\n<a id=\"par25\" href=\"http:\/\/cablegate.wikileaks.org\/cable\/2004\/12\/04ANKARA7211.html#par25\">\u00b6<\/a>25. (C) However, the broad, rubber-meets-the-road reality is\r\n\r\nthat Islam in Turkey is caught in a vise of (1) 100 years of\r\n\r\n\"secular\" pressure to hide itself from public view, (2)\r\n\r\npressure and competition from brotherhoods and lodges to\r\n\r\nfollow their narrow, occult \"true way\", and (3) the faction-\r\n\r\nand positivism-ridden aridity of the Religious Affairs\r\n\r\nDirectorate (Diyanet).  As a result, Islam as it is lived in\r\n\r\nTurkey is stultified, riddled with hypocrisy, ignorant and\r\n\r\nintolerant of other religions' presence in Turkey, and unable\r\n\r\nto eject those who would politicize it in a radical,\r\n\r\nanti-Western way.  Imams are for the most part poorly\r\n\r\neducated and all too ready to insinuate anti-Western,\r\n\r\nanti-Christian or anti-Jewish sentiments into their sermons.\r\n\r\nExceptionally few Muslims in Turkey have the courage to\r\n\r\nchallenge conventional Sunni thinking about jihad or, e.g.,\r\n\r\nverses in the Repentance shura of the Koran which have for so\r\n\r\nlong been used to justify violence against \"infidels\". \r\n\r\n<a id=\"par26\" href=\"http:\/\/cablegate.wikileaks.org\/cable\/2004\/12\/04ANKARA7211.html#par26\">\u00b6<\/a>26. (C) The problem is compounded by the willingness of\r\n\r\npoliticians such as Gul to play elusively with politicized\r\n\r\nIslam.  Until Turkey ensures that the humanist strain in\r\n\r\nIslam prevails here, Islam in Turkey will remain a troubled,\r\n\r\ndefensive force, hypocritical to an extreme degree and\r\n\r\nunwilling to adapt to the challenges of open society. \r\n\r\n<a id=\"par27\" href=\"http:\/\/cablegate.wikileaks.org\/cable\/2004\/12\/04ANKARA7211.html#par27\">\u00b6<\/a>27. (C) A second question is the relation of Turkey and its\r\n\r\ncitizens to history -- the history of this land and citizens'\r\n\r\nindividual history.  Subject to rigid taboos, denial, fears,\r\n\r\nand mandatory gross distortions, the study of history and\r\n\r\npractice of historiography in the Republic of Turkey remind\r\n\r\none of an old Soviet academic joke: the faculty party chief\r\n\r\nassembles his party cadres and, warning against various\r\n\r\nideological threats, proclaims, \"The future is certain.  It's\r\n\r\nonly that damned past that keeps changing.\" \r\n\r\n<a id=\"par28\" href=\"http:\/\/cablegate.wikileaks.org\/cable\/2004\/12\/04ANKARA7211.html#par28\">\u00b6<\/a>28. (C) Until Turkey can reconcile itself to its past,\r\n\r\nincluding the troubling aspects of its Ottoman past, in free\r\n\r\nand open debate, how will Turkey reconcile itself to the\r\n\r\nconcept and practice of reconciliation in the EU?  How will\r\n\r\nit have the self confidence to take decisions and formulate\r\n\r\npolicies responsive to U.S. interests?  Some in AKP are\r\n\r\njoining what is still only a handful of others to take\r\n\r\ntentative, but nonetheless inspiring, steps in this regard.\r\n\r\nHowever, the road ahead will require a massive overhaul of\r\n\r\neducation, the introduction and acceptance of rule of law,\r\n\r\nand a fundamental redefinition of the relation between\r\n\r\ncitizen and state.  In the words of the great (Alevi)\r\n\r\nAnatolian bard Asik Veysel, this is a \"long and delicate\r\n\r\nroad.\"\r\n<\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Es ist faszinierend, solche Dokumente einsehen zu k\u00f6nnen. Aber es w\u00e4re naiv, sie als Stenographie des Weltgeistes zu lesen. Sie ergeben nicht einmal das Bild der USA von der T\u00fcrkei. Man sieht, wie es auch hier auf den Autor und seinen Kontext ankommt. Edelman benennt freim\u00fctig viele reale Missst\u00e4nde &#8211; vor allem dieser letzte Absatz ist sicher auch heute noch hoch relevant.<\/p>\n<p>Aber aus dem gesamten Kabel spricht eben auch der Gesandte George W. Bushs, ein <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightweb.irc-online.org\/profile\/Edelman_Eric\">gut verdrahteter Neocon<\/a>, der der T\u00fcrkei niemals verzeihen kann, dass sie sich dem Irakkrieg verweigert hat. Edelman wurde der erste wirklich verhasste Botschafter in der T\u00fcrkei. Er wurde als eine Art Kolonialoffizier empfunden. Die Entt\u00e4uschung des Botschafters \u00fcber den selbstbewusster werdenden Alliierten spricht aus dem Kabel und f\u00e4rbt offensichtlich die Analyse. Erdogan, der den Irakkrieg f\u00fcr einen Fehler h\u00e4lt, versteht eben einfach die Fakten nicht! Nun ja, das sieht man heute etwas anders. All das muss man mitbedenken, wenn man Edelmans Kabel liest.
