It\u2019s a  general manager. Its job is to keep you focused on what is relevant,  while ignoring distractions. It\u2019s what makes it possible for you to hold  two different things in your mind at one time and switch between them.<\/p>\n<p>If you have two languages and you use them regularly, the way the  brain\u2019s networks work is that every time you speak, both languages pop  up and the executive control system has to sort through everything and  attend to what\u2019s relevant in the moment. Therefore the bilinguals use  that system more, and it\u2019s that regular use that makes that system more  efficient.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ich f\u00fcrchte manchmal, dass unsere Fixierung auf das Deutsche als Integrationsvoraussetzung solche Potentiale einer Einwanderungsgesellschaft zu sehr in den Schatten dr\u00e4ngt. Es ist ja manchmal ein Ton in der Debatte, der das T\u00fcrkischlernen zuhause geradezu als Integrationshindernis erscheinen l\u00e4sst.<\/p>\n<p>Das ist nach den Erkenntnissen von Frau Bialystok ganz falsch. Die mangelnden T\u00fcrkischkenntnisse sind ein Problem, weil sie dann auch nur durch mangelnde Deutschkenntnisse aufgefangen werden. Deutsche Kinderg\u00e4rten und Schulen sollten den Ehrgeiz haben, den Kindern, die zuhause T\u00fcrkisch mitbekommen, exzellentes T\u00fcrkisch beizubringen &#8211; ganz wie beim Englischen oder Franz\u00f6sischen oder Spanischen. Das T\u00fcrkische sollte jedenfalls in unserer Debatte nicht wie ein Hemmnis behandelt werden, sondern als eine m\u00f6gliche Gabe:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Q. Is it still?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A.<\/strong> Until about the 1960s, the conventional wisdom was  that bilingualism was a disadvantage. Some of this was xenophobia.  Thanks to science, we now know that the opposite is true.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q. Many immigrants choose not to teach their children their native language. Is this a good thing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A.<\/strong> I\u2019m asked about this all the time. People e-mail me  and say, \u201cI\u2019m getting married to someone from another culture, what  should we do with the children?\u201d I always say, \u201cYou\u2019re sitting on a  potential gift.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are two major reasons people should pass their heritage language  onto children. First, it connects children to their ancestors. The  second is my research: Bilingualism is good for you. It makes brains  stronger. It is brain exercise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q. Are you bilingual?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A.<\/strong> Well, I have fully bilingual grandchildren because  my daughter married a Frenchman. When my daughter announced her  engagement to her French boyfriend, we were a little surprised. It\u2019s  always astonishing when your child announces she\u2019s getting married.
