And just as his declaration of \u2018God is dead\u2019 opened the aperture \u200eto the dark world out there, today, the irreconcilable nature of the modern world with the \u200eidentity of Muslims has opened up the gates of horror to us.<br \/>\n\t<a href='https:\/\/blog.zeit.de\/joerglau\/files\/2008\/01\/ahmad-zeidabadi2.jpg' title='ahmad-zeidabadi2.jpg'><img src='https:\/\/blog.zeit.de\/joerglau\/files\/2008\/01\/ahmad-zeidabadi2.jpg' alt='ahmad-zeidabadi2.jpg' \/><\/a><br \/>\n\t<em>Ahmad Zeidabadi<\/em>\u200e<\/p>\n<p>\tThe assassination of Benazir Bhutto in a country whose modern identity is built on \u200ereligion, is only a small example of the violence that appears to drown us, if permitted to \u200eunleash. Some Muslims who have tasted this danger at close range know of its scope and \u200ehorrors. But unfortunately, there is no serious discourse among them and no practical \u200eroad map to deal with it. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\tI am occasionally questioned for using the term \u2018us\u2019 whenever I use the term Muslim and \u200etheir violence. \u2018It is they who perpetrate the violence and \u2018we\u2019 are not part of \u2018them\u2019\u2019, \u200ethey protest. The reality is that when I read the writings of some of these secular thinkers \u200ein the Islamic world I am astounded and perhaps even envious of how na\u00efve they are in \u200ethe lines they draw between themselves and the Islamicists. They believe that by \u200echanging their own views they acquire an identity that is independent from their native \u200eculture and have a destiny that is different as well.\u200e<\/p>\n<p>\tI think they have only eliminated the fa\u00e7ade of the problem. Certainly this is one way to \u200esimply shake off some of the baggage and tensions that they carry. I believe that anybody \u200eborn in a place that has the stamp of Islam on it is at least partly subject to the historic \u200eand identity destiny of that culture, regardless of whether he accepts it or not.\u200e<\/p>\n<p>\tSalman Rushdie may be among Muslims who denied having the same destiny and put \u200ethat in words that are said to be insulting to the prophet of the Muslims, but his destiny \u200ehas not turned out much different because Ayatollah Khomeini\u2019s death fatwa has been \u200efollowing him ever since, depriving him of his desired and normal life.\u200e<\/p>\n<p>\tSo there is a group that I label \u2018we\u2019 or \u2018us\u2019 which is undergoing a historic crises \u200evacillating in choice between the modern and the traditional worlds, roots, and identity &#8211; \u200eor somewhere in between.
